[PINK ROSE]

This was the first piece I ever made with adoption in mind. We were asked to do an "autobiographical" project in the first year of uni. It caught wind that I was adopted and it would make an interesting piece. I protested for a long while for at this point in my life I totally denied that adoption effected me in the slightest. I still did the project regardless of my reservations.

My only starting point was my name, my given name is the only thing my birthmother gave me. Le Bich-Hoong which I was told, by the only Vietnamese person I had met up until that point, meant pink rose. So I combined my denial of my adoption and my birth name, a name I have never been known by. I did this by immersing myself in rose petals until I drowned in them.

I did not work on adoption art for another two years after this project. It was only later I realized how important this piece would become and how pivotal it was to showing me the potential of using art to express my inner most feelings.
